“It is my feeling that as
we grow older we should
become not less radical
but more so. I do not, of
course mean in any
political-party sense, but
in a willingness to
struggle for those things
in which we passionately
believe.”

Waterloo Region Gerontology Interest Group
GIG History
The Gerontology Interest Group was started in 1984 by a cross section
of agencies to network around senior’s issues in the region. They
began with the forming of a board of directors and held regular
meetings sharing information amongst them. Their annual general
meeting was open to the public and the group started a theme called
“Sharing our Successes” where people could talk about what was new
for seniors in the area. A membership, available to anyone in the
community, was started to help support the educational seminars that
started in the 90’s. These were evening public information sessions
offering current trends and issues around seniors. A newsletter was
started in the late 90’s and circulated to members. Starting in 2000 the
group offered it’s first “What’s New in Gerontology” workshop at
Conestoga College. This format of an inexpensive hands-on learning
day, for anyone working in the field of gerontology, was well received
and has continued each year.
Each year the GIG board and membership changes faces as those
involved with seniors in our community come and go but the main
goals remain the same.
